The Red Devils parted ways with the 21-year-old full-back this summer as he permanently completed a move to Benfica after spending the final six months of the 2023-24 season on loan at the Portuguese club. United sold the defender for a meagre £5million (€5.9m) transfer fee.

Now reports that La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have shown interest in the youngster who has appeared for the Portuguese giants in nine matches across all competitions this season. The report, however, claims that the Premier League club have a buyback option and could exercise that to bring him back to Old Trafford in the future.

Fernandez joined United's youth system in 2020 from Real Madrid before being promoted to their senior side in 2022, however, despite making the matchday squad in two Premier League matches against Chelsea and Brighton, he failed to make an appearance for the club.
