THE BIGGER PICTURE
Blackburn's failure to sign McGuire on loan on the final day of the January transfer window was blamed on an "administrative error" after paperwork registering the player was not submitted to the EFL on time. The relevant documentation was uploaded but ended up in a draft applcation area of the system and was therefore not received by the EFL, whose board denied Blackburn's appeal to have the transfer ratified.

DID YOU KNOW?
McGuire scored 13 goals in 29 appearances in his rookie MLS season in 2023. That translated to his senior USMNT debut during an international friendly against Slovenia in January. So far in 2024, the Nebraskan has five goals in 10 MLS games.

WHAT NEXT FOR McGUIRE & BLACKBURN?
Blackburn had done enough to agree a loan with a view to a permanent transfer in winter, so the possibility of being able to come to an agreement again in summer appear promising. But McGuire himself will have the Olympics to focus on soon enough, having been a regular for the United States Under-23 team that will be heading to France in July.
